SRARP Archaeological Compliance-Fiscal Year 1999

The SRARP compliance program investigated 72 archaeological sites during FY99. Fifty-four of these sites are new and include 15 prehistoric sites, 17 historic sites and 22 sites with both prehistoric and historic components. The 18 revisits included 8 prehistoric and 2 historic sites, and 8 sites with both prehistoric and historic components. Fifty isolated artifacts finds were also recorded during FY99. Of these, seven contained historic artifacts and 43 consisted of prehistoric artifacts.

The SRARP surveyed a total of 2547 acres in FY99 for 15 Site Use Applications and five Timber Compartment Prescriptions. Altogether 3,157 STPs were excavated to locate sites and define site boundaries. Categorized, this includes 1,053 Site Use transect STPs, 709 Timber Compartment STPs, 863 new site definition STPs, 324 previous site redefinition STPs, and 208 isolated artifact find STPs. Fifty-four percent (1393 acres) of the total survey area for all projects in FY99 involved SR-88 Site Use Permit Application projects. Twenty-six percent (654 acres) of the total survey area included clear-cut reconnaissance. The remaining 20 percent (515 acres) of the total area surveyed for all projects in FY99 involved Timber Compartment Forest Stands slated for siliviculture.

In addition to the archaeological sites discussed above, investigations encountered 50 isolated artifact finds. These isolated finds have little potential to contribute significant information concerning the historic or prehistoric occupation of the SRS or the region, and are recommended not eligible for the NRHP. Proposed undertakings will have no adverse effect on any significant cultural deposits at these locales. No further management consideration of these isolated deposits is recommended.
