SRARP Archaeological Compliance-Fiscal Year 2004
The SRARP investigated 80 archaeological sites during FY04. Seventy-one of these sites are newly recorded and nine are revisits to previously recorded sites. Forty-three of the 71 new sites are currently being delineated, and the results as well as eligibility status of each site will be included in the FY05 Annual Report. Of the total sites investigated during FY04, 19 are considered not eligible for NRHP status. With the exception of 38AK34, which has been adequately tested and is considered eligible for nomination to the NRHP, the remaining sites investigated in FY04 have been assigned an indeterminate status, and each will be avoided by US DOE-SR contractors. In the event that any of the indeterminate sites are threatened, further testing will be conducted to make a determination of eligibility. Sixteen isolated artifact occurrences were also recorded during FY04. Isolated finds are considered to hold low research potential and as such there will be no adverse effects to these ephemeral resources through US DOE- SR related activities. Summary data for new and existing sites are provided in Tables 1 - 3. Evaluations of these sites are provided in Table 4. FY04 results are inventoried in Table 8.
The SRARP surveyed a total of 1,681 acres in FY04 for six Site Use Applications and six Timber Compartment Prescriptions. Twenty-two percent (365 acres) of the total area surveyed in FY04 involved SR-88 Site Use Permit Application projects. Additionally, 78% (1,316 acres) of the total area surveyed for all projects in FY04 involved Timber Compartment Forest Stands slated for harvesting. Of the total area surveyed in FY04, over 14% (243 acres) were subjected to intensive survey (STPs dug on a 30-m grid). This amount of intensive survey includes 110 acres for USFS-SR activities and 133 acres for US DOE-SR Site Use projects.
In regards to the Section 110 Regulatory process of inventorying all cultural resources on public lands, the SRARP has surveyed approximately 76,722 acres (39.75%) on the SRS since 1978 with almost 1,900 sites recorded to date. An ArcGIS database layer of all surveyed area is in final preparation and will be completed early in FY05. With this layer, the FY05 report will present the actual area surveyed on the SRS categorized by survey method and relative site frequencies by Archaeological Sensitivity Zone. In this way, the SRARP will demonstrate how the annual survey coverage and results contribute to the fulfillment of Section 110 obligations.
